EFT Couples Intensives

A Couple Therapy Intensive offers the same Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy process, but with longer and more frequent sessions, scattered throughout 3 days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

This process is great for a couple that:

  • is already in EFT therapy and wants to have the opportunity to do more work in fewer days
  • is already in EFT therapy but wants some help to get over a stuck spot
  • is dealing with infidelity
  • is in crisis
  • is thinking seriously about divorce
  • lives far from an experienced Emotionally Focused Couple Therapist
  • is exceedingly busy during the week, but has more flexibility on the weekends

For couples that are new to me:

The schedule:

  • Fill out the paperwork before coming in
  • Friday:
    • 1 hour individual meeting for each partner in the morning
    • 1.5 hour couples session in the morning
    • Break for lunch and rest
    • 1.5 hour session in the afternoon
  • Saturday:
    • 1.5 hour session in the morning
    • Break for lunch and rest
    • 1.5 hour session in the afternoon
  • Sunday:
    • 1.5 to 2 hour session in the morning

Depending on the needs of the couple, the frequency and timing has some flexibility, but this schedule is based on experience in doing intensives.  In the down time in between sessions, I often suggest rest, complimentary reading, such as Love Sense, or Hold me Tight by Sue Johnson, or the Emotionally Focused Therapy Couple Workbook.  I will have more specific feedback for you about how to spend the time, depending on where we are in the process.

The cost for a new couple intensive is $1600.

An Intensive is not intended to be a substitute for ongoing Emotionally Focused Therapy.  If you haven’t done emotionally focused couple therapy before, this can be a good way to get a jump start on the work.  It is still essential that you have a therapist in place to work with you after the intensive.  It is important to have someone lined up for the post therapy, before you come for the Intensive.  If you need help finding a good EFT therapist in your area, I will be happy to help guide you in that process.

For my current couple clients who wish to do a more intensive piece of work, we can assess how your work is progressing and what your hopes are for an intensive and plan accordingly.  Frequency and length of sessions are dependent on your goals and could be as intensive as they are for a new couple (see above), or as little asa 2 hour session, a full weekend intensive, or anywhere in between.

The cost for an existing couple depends on the number and length of sessions we determine would be best for you.

This is not a good process for a couple that is:

  • struggling with serious substance abuse
    • if this is happening in your relationship, you can seek out a therapist in your area expert at dealing with substance abuse.  You might try looking at Psychology Today on line and searching for an addictions therapist in your area.  This is not a guarantee of a good quality therapist, but it is a start if you don’t already have someone excellent in mind.
  • experiencing domestic violence
    • if this is happening you might start by searching on a site like this for guidance in finding a domestic violence expert and help with getting safe.
  • having one of the partners in an ongoing affair
    • if one of the partners is having trouble stopping an affair, get help from a therapist expert in working with affairs.  You might try looking at Psychology Today and searching on therapists in your area.  This is not a guarantee of a good quality therapist, but it is a start if you don’t already have someone excellent in mind.
